Only red and green day markers on the points of land, indicating the pass, marked the entrance to the bay. Of course, they were poised in the opposite convention, to the rest of the world; red on the left and green on the right as one is approaching the anchorage. We timed the passage perfectly, arrived at daybreak, and better still, slack water.
Our night passage from Makemo to Tahanea, became an eighteen hour test of patience. We were fortunate to have generally steady winds - a double-reefed main and a partially rolled up genoa kept us moving.
